James Powers - Artistic Director James Powers began his musical career at an early age as a chorister in the famed Columbus Boychoir (now the American Boychoir). He has performed under the batons of Leonard Bernstein, Erich Leinsdorf, and Charles Munch. Mr. Powers received his degree in voice performance from East Carolina University. While there, his abilities as a conductor were noticed and he was recruited by Miami University in Ohio as a Graduate Choral Assistant. Part of his Choral assignment included the preparation of major choral-orchestral works for the Cincinnati symphony and the May Festival. Upon returning to North Carolina, Mr. Powers quickly established himself as a distinguished solo performer, teacher, and conductor. His collegiate and civic choirs have performed regularly with the North Carolina Symphony and toured Europe and Scandinavia. He has appeared frequently as a guest conductor and clinician with high school choral festivals. As a tenor soloist, Mr. Powers is acclaimed for his interpretations of Baroque and twentieth century literature, and appeared with the Virginia Choral Society as the Evangelist in performances of Bach's Passion According to Saint John. Included in his credits is the Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds in Charleston, South Carolina and the Williamsburg Symphonia. He has also prepared a performance of Haydn's Mass in Time of War for presentation in Carnegie Hall under John Rutter in May 1994. |
